Interdisciplinar Workshop on Modern Applied Microscopy in Molecular and Cell Biophysics
Research
APHYS2003 Workshop
October 15th, 2003
This truly interdisciplinar workshop aims to promote cooperation
between physicists and molecular/cell biologists for the understanding of biologically
important processes in applied research. Since modern Microscopy techniques allow us not
only to access to the (ultra)structure of cells and molecules, but also physical
properties at the micro and nanoscale, such as elasticity, viscoelasticity and other
mechanical properties, electrical charge, adhesion, etc., which are crucial for the
understanding of many of these processes, the most fruitful research strategy
dealing with these systems demands the interplay of researchers from quite different and
tradicionally distant disciplines such as physicists, materials scientists, cell
biologists, molecular biologists, microbiologists, computer scientists, etc.
Techniques covered by the Workshop will be those listed at the
"Imaging Techniques/Microscopy" Conference Topic, and works reporting
comparative studies or showing the complementarity between two or more microscopy
techniques will be specially welcomed. Important examples of applications will be:
- SPM of DNA Molecules
- Microscopy application to the study of Molecules in vivo
- Adsorption of Molecules
- Mechanical and Stuctural properties of proteins, nucleic acids,
polysacharides and biomolecules.
- Mechanics of Molecules and Single-Molecule Diffusion on Cell
Surfaces
- Molecular Resolution in SPM
- 3D Visualization of Molecules and Cells
- Molecular Manipulation and Surface Modification: Applications
- Optical tweezers: manipulating single molecules
- Emerging technologies and Applications: Ion Microscopy,
Pharmaceutical applications, Imaging of therapeutic drugs in cancer
research, etc.
- High-resolution imaging of cellular structures
- Micromechanical properties of the cell
- Monitoring of the Cell dynamics in real time
- SPM application to the study of the architecture of the membrane, organelles and
cytoskeleton of cells.
- Imaging, localizing and identifying integral membrane proteins at the surface of living
cells
As for the rest of the APHYS-2003 Conference, this workshop intends to
be not only a space of dissemination of the current applied research in this fields, but
will also promote contacts within the presenting researchers and research groups, for
taking advantage of the current opportunities for funding of this type of research mainly
in the framework of the European Operational Programs and Iniciatives, and very specially,
within the Sixth Framework Programm (FP6). Therefore, "Projects presentations"
and "Call for Partners presentations" are also welcomed in addition to the
invited and contributed oral contribution and posters.

Accepted papers will be published in a Special Issue of Journal of Microscopy,
although publication in other of the Journals can be considered if the topic is
appropiate.
Potencial reviewers are cordially asked to write to the Conference organization secretariat@formatex.org for helping in the
reviewing of papers. The official list of reviewers will be included in the Proceedings.
