“Aula Virtual”: An e-learning management platform
of Universitat de València
Development based on Open Code and Collaborative Software

This document
presents the analysis and exhibition of the .LRN implantation process at the Universitat de València Estudi General (UVEG) developed by the Computer Science Service of the University: “Aula Virtual”. “Aula Virtual” is
the result of a world community collaboration, and
represents the largest .LRN implementation that makes use of a free database (PostgreSQL). The “Aula Virtual”
includes different authentication authorities, interface for different
languages and the necessary applications for the communication, collaboration,
evaluation, organization and distribution of educational support contents that
nowadays are used for university
lectures.
Currently
the architecture is composed of a Dual
processors AMD Opteron and operating system Linux Debian; With the Web server AOLServer
and application .LRN installed in one of the machines, and the Database server PostgreSQL on the remaining machine. CVS oacs-5-1 branch is the version of the
code installed, in
which we were involved during its development.
In
order to carry out integration with the information systems of the Service of
Computer science of the Universitat, diverse packages
of OpenACS and portlets
.LRN were generated. The integration of the
OpenACS Chat package in the .LRN courses portlets, the creation of the personal student file for
each course, or the possibility of introducing mathematical LATEX equations are
examples of functionalities required by the user, which also constitute
our main
contribution during the
development of this tool.
Finally, practical results of the usability of “Aula Virtual” are evaluated and further work
are highlighted aiming to improve the learning and teaching process.

Este trabajo presenta “Aula Virtual”,
la implementación en la Universitat de València de .LRN, un sistema de gestión
del aprendizaje mediante software libre. Es fruto de la colaboración en una
comunidad mundial, siendo la mayor implementación de .LRN que utiliza además
una base de datos libre (PostgreSQL). Posee distintas
autoridades de autentificación, interfaz multiidioma
y aplicaciones para la comunicación, colaboración, evaluación, organización y
distribución de contenidos de apoyo docente a las clases presenciales.
La integración con el resto de sistemas de información universitaria se ha
conseguido con la creación de paquetes OpenACS y portlets .LRN. Se han desarrollado nuevas funcionalidades
que se han puesto a pública disposición, como la integración de un módulo de chat en los cursos, la ficha personal por estudiante, o la
inserción de fórmulas LaTeX. Finalmente, se valoran
los resultados de la implantación y se exponen futuras líneas de trabajo para
potenciar los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje.
